The Great Ohio River Swim took place on September 24, 2017. It is the only open water swim on the Ohio River to cross the river and back. Participants start at the Serpentine Wall on the Ohio side and swim across the river to Kentucky and then back to the Public Landing in the heart of Cincinnati!
Elder Swimming was well represented at the event, including (pictured left to right): Adam Monk '10 and Eric DiSalle (both former assistant coaches), Paxton Kelley '17, retired head coach John Book '80, and Griffin Kelley '20. Monk, DiSalle, and Book all placed in the top three of their respective age groups while the Kelley brothers placed 5th and 6th in their age group.
Our friends at the Prep Sports Radio Network posted the following message on Facebook along with the picture of the purple swim cap shown here:
Early this morning was the Great Ohio River Swim. It is now named in memory of Bill Keating Jr. who passed away early this spring. The competitive swimmers wore purple swim caps since Mr. Keating had been an assistant swimming coach at Elder.
Keating, of course, is a St. Xavier grad, and at last year's race was asked why he didn't coach with the Bombers. His reply? "They didn't need my help, but Elder did. I always admired the Panther determination, and I loved every minute of coaching them". The purple caps were a moving tribute.
