2010 Awards


Special awards were also distributed to distinguished members of the class of 2010.  They are:

Computer Science Department, the awards of recognition are given to:
Database Application Development:  Jacob D. Meyer and Kevin P. O’Brien  
Software Use:  Nicholas D. Dupont    
Introduction to Programming in Visual Basic:   John D. Alexander 
Advanced Programming in Visual Basic:  John D. Alexander  
Graphic Design Software Use:  Jacob C. Holmes and Zachary R. Martini  

The Art Department Leadership Award includes a certificate of appreciation and a monetary award.  These students are commended for high quality of consistent effort over four years.  Receiving these awards are Matthew J. Harpenau and Bryan C. Peters.

The James R. Borgman Purchase Award goes to the student who best exemplifies the spirit and ideals of the Elder Art Department.  This award is named after James Borgman, Elder class of 1940, and father of Cincinnati Enquirer editorial cartoonist Jim Borgman ’72. Elder will purchase a piece of art from this student, and it will hang in the main hall for one year. The 2010 winner of this prestigious award is William H. Anneken.

The Religion Department would like to recognize seniors who have given evidence of the qualities of personal character and academic achievement. These certificates go to Stephen G. Hemmer, Matthew A. Reckers, Benjamin J. Nutter, and Brent A. Zeiser.

Awards for exemplary work in Community Service are given to Peter L. Bachman, Daniel T. Buelterman, Robert J. Busche, Nicholas M. Caminiti, Zachary A. Creutzinger, Michael K. Curtis, Donald J. The Mathematics Department would like to recognize six seniors who have demonstrated their excellence in the field of Mathematics. These awards go to:
For Calculus:   Joseph P. Metz, Alexander M. Redrow, Kenneth L. Orloff, and William C. Voellmecke
For Probability & Statistics:  Tyler A. Hoffman  and Ryan D. Ruffing

The English Department wishes to honor two seniors who most reflect expertise in writing.  They emulate the necessary skills of a successful writer as well as a successful person – creativity, organization, and unselfish effort. These awards go to:  Jacob P. Meyer and Benjamin J. Nutter.

The Social Studies Department Awards of Excellence are given in two senior areas of study:
For Economics:   Peter L. Bachman, Steven W. Schmidt, and Richard A. Smithmeyer                                  
For American Government:   Andrew M. Condia, Jacob J. Kelley, and Phillip E. Manegold

The Science Department would like to recognize the efforts of the top senior science students by presenting the following awards.  Students are recognized for their achievements in the classroom and some for their pursuit of a science-related career.  They are academically in top of their particular discipline and overall fantastic gentlemen.

In AP Chemistry:    James P. Dugan II, Steven J. Kent, and Alexander M. Redrow

The Industrial Arts Department Awards are given in two areas.
For Computer Aided Design, the award goes to: Tyler A. Hoffman, Erik R. Maloney, and Kevin P. O’Brien
For Computer Aided Design II, the award goes to: John R. Lucas, Phillip E. Manegold, and Peter Toth.

The annual Martin H. Smith Memorial Music Award, presented through Elder graduate Michael Heath, is given to a student who has demonstrated leadership and potential in the field of music. This premier award goes to Andrew J. Kurzhals.

The John Philip Sousa Band Certificate and pin is presented annually in recognition of outstanding achievement and interest in Instrumental Music. This special award goes to David L. Geis.

The ELDERADO, Elder’s Yearbook is a project undertaken  by Elder students.  We would like to recognize the efforts of the leaders of the ELDERADO staff.  They are Cody S. Makin and Anthony J. Miliano.

The PURPLE QUILL is Elder’s student newspaper. These seniors displayed exemplary leadership skills in being responsible for all facets of every edition. Elder High School gratefully acknowledges the efforts of Johnathan B. Lewin and John Alexander Marcheschi.

Student Tutors:  Each year a number of students volunteer their talents to tutor students, usually freshmen and sophomores, who are encountering academic difficulty in one or the other subjects. They receive no payment for their efforts. We, therefore, would like to recognize those seniors who took part in this tutoring program by presenting them with certificates of appreciation. They are:  Alexander H. Arar, Patrick J. Baxter, Stephen G. Blake, Andrew M. Brinkmann, Brian R. Combs, James P. Dugan, Tyler A. Hoffman, Jacob C. Holmes, Christopher R. Jaeger, Jonathan D. The following student was honored earlier this year as Elder’s Joe Quinn Scholar Athlete. We would like to recognize him again at this time. He is Mark R. Miller.

The United States Marine Corps offers an Award of Scholastic Excellence to a student who has proven to be an accomplished scholar. This award goes to Ryan J. Priestle.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association gives several awards under the heading of  “Respect the Game”.  We are proud to award the Courageous Student Award to Casey J. Rudolph.  The State Award for Exemplary Contribution and Service to Anthony J. Miliano.  The Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award is awarded to Mark R. Miller.

The “Semper Fidelis” Award from the U.S. Marine Corps for musical excellence is awarded to Robert T. Toelke.

The United States Army Reserve believes that young people should strive to be the best that they can be.  Their Scholar/Athlete Award program recognizes William C. Voellmecke.

The Price Hill Old Timers Scholar-Athlete Award was earlier this month presented to Cody S. Makin and Timothy M. O’Conner.

We would like to recognize the following student for being selected the Student of the Month for the Western Hills Exchange Club. He was later escalated to Student of the Year. He is William C. Voellmecke.

The Elder Businessmen Association awards scholarships to two deserving seniors this year.  They are Nicholas M. Caminiti and Steven W. Schmidt.

Each year a senior is chosen by members of the Elder faculty to receive the Greg Weber American Spirit Award. This award was created by the local chapter of the Marine Corps League to memorialize Greg Weber, a 1981 alumnus of Elder killed in El Salvador in 1985.  The student is recognized for his ability and esprit de corps to better serve his community and his country.  This year we present the Greg Weber Award to Erik R. Maloney.

The United States Marine Corps presents the Distinguished Athlete Award to a senior who exhibits the personal traits of courage, poise, self-confidence, and leadership while performing as a varsity athlete.  This award is  presented to Peter L. Bachman.

The following students, by demonstrating distinguished performance and high potential for future academic accomplishment, were named as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. They are John D Alexander, Ryan J. Priestle, and Robert T. Toelke.

In recognition of outstanding academic performance and promise of continued scholastic excellence, the P & G Fund is pleased to present a scholarship award to Joseph P. Metz.

Representing over 100 years of Case Alumni, the Michelson-Morley Award, named after two scientists from Case School of Applied Science and Western Reserve University who paved the way to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, is awarded to a senior for exhibiting outstanding talent and achievements in the areas of Mathematics and science. This prestigious award goes to Steven J. Kent.

The following students will be receiving an Honors Diploma at Graduation because they have successfully met the requirements as outlined in the Student Handbook.  We applaud their outstanding academic effort.  These graduates are:  John D.
