Seton-Elder Performing Arts Series Commemorates 40 Years with Fifth Music Man Production

The Seton-Elder Performing Arts Series celebrates a milestone this year, forty years of spectacular entertainment!  To commemorate the occasion, the series is producing its fifth production of The Music Man!

All alumni cast members from the 1971, 1981, 1990 and 2000 productions are invited to take part in this celebration.  Join us at The Music Man Cast Reunion on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Seton Commons followed by the performance at 8:00 p.m.  Call your former cast members and get together to relive the music and memories.  The cost is $20 a person and includes drinks, appetizers and a ticket to the performance.  To download a reservation form, click here.   Call Mary Sunderhaus at 471-2600 ext.132 for more information. 

Not attending "The Music Man" reunion, but still want tickets to the performance?  Tickets are also available for all performances on April 21, 23, 24 & 25.   Performance times are: Wed. April 21 at 7:00 PM , Fri. April 23 at 8:00 PM., Sat. April 24 at 8:00 PM and Sun. '04 Alum Preparing to Volunteer in Tanzania

Craig Kotte '04 is seeking to raise funds to volunteer his time and services on a three-month volunteer program in Tanzania with Cross-Cultural Solutions.  Craig is looking to raise $6,364 over the next 8 months for his volunteer program.  This amount goes toward the coordination of his volunteer placement, education on the culture and issues facing the community, lodging at a CCS Home-Base, all meals and bottled water, in-country transportation, experienced and professional support staff, local and incoming international phone calls, a 24-hour emergency hotline, and comprehensive travel medical insurance.  To read more, click here(03/11/10)

Bill Hemmer '83 Reflects on His Football Days at Elder

Senior Bill Voellmecke Named Student of the Year

Senior Bill Voellmecke has been named Student of the Year by the Western Hills Exchange Club.  He was selected from six local high school students previously recognized as Student of the Month.  Voellmecke is now eligible to compete for the $10,000 scholarship awarded by the National Exchange Club for the Youth of the Year.  Congratulations Bill!  (02/25/10)


Scholarships Available to Current Elder Students

If you are currently an Elder freshman, sophomore or junior, and have a GPA of 85 or greater at the end of the first semester 2009-2010 school year, you are eligible to apply for an Altiora or Droder Scholarship.  Applications are available from Mrs. Regan in the Development Office or you may click here to download an application.  Completed applications are due on Friday, March 26 by 8:00 AM.  No late applications will be accepted.  Scholarship recipients will be notified by April 15, 2010.  (02/19/10)


Elder Students Receive Scholastic Art Awards

This year, the Elder Art Department had 5 pieces nominated for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.  The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Program is the longest running, most prestigious recognition program for teen artists/writers in the country. 

Senior David Glatt had two artworks of mixed media selected for the show.  One winning a Gold Key and the other a Silver Key award.  Junior Jordan Daugherty received an Honorable Mention for a sculpture he created.  Sophomore Alex Sunderman and Freshman Ryan Murphy, pictured in the photo above, also had pieces nominated for an award.  These works were on display through this February 21st in a gallery at the Covington River Centre.  (02/22/10)


Elder Musicians in Catholic Honor Band

Nine members of the Elder High School Marching Band were selected to perform in the second annual Southwestern Ohio Catholic Honor Band on Saturday, February 13th.  The performance took place at the University of Dayton.  The nine members selected are:  Jamaal Andrews, Patrick Cole, David Geis, Noelle Hingsbergen, Andy Kurzhals, Allison Lauck, Lincoln Meltebrink, Rob Toelke, and Stephen Weber.    (02/17/10)

Jeff Zeller ’87 Promoted to News Director for Fox TV Station in FL

Join Us April 18th For Elder Alumni Family Walk

Come join with fellow grads, families, and friends for the Elder Alumni Family Walk on Sunday, April 18, 2010.  The 5K Walk through "Elder Country" will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Schaeper Center.  The cost is $10 per walker or $40 per family and includes a t-shirt, food, and beverages at the grill-out in The Pit after the walk.  All proceeds from the walk benefit the Elder High School Scholarship Fund and Cincinnati Children's Hospital.  Walkers are also encouraged to bring a canned good for the Anderson Ferry Food Pantry.   Please mail registration fee and payment by March 31, 2010.  Click here to download a registration form(01/26/10)


Nick Chaney ’07 Names Blog Site After School’s Motto

Nick Chaney '07, now in his third year at the University of Missouri, is studying Broadcast Journalism.  He is working with the campus radio station (KCOU 88.1 FM//kcou.fm) doing a talk show on Thursday nights from 6-8 and calling games (volleyball, football, basketball, hopefully baseball) for Mizzou and hopes to switch majors to Sports Journalism.  While looking to build his resume, he started a blog using Elder’s motto, Altiora, as the title.  Click here to check out The Altiora Chrionicles(01/30/10)


Diver Chad Thornton Breaks Record

Senior Diver Chad Thornton broke Eric Kelly's (’08) 11 dive school record at the Classic Meet held at Miami University the weekend of January 16th.  He also received one of the Classic scholarships at finals on the 17th.   Congratulations Chad!  (01/22/10)


OMEA Competition Comes to Elder

The Elder High School Music Department hosted the OMEA Solo & Ensemble contest on Saturday, January 23rd.  The Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) is the principal organization in Ohio promoting music education in elementary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and universities.  Elder is providing a great performance opportunity for nearly 1,000 students in Hamilton/Clermont Counties.  (01/24/10)


Elder Students Nominated to U.S. Service Academies

United States Representative Steve Driehaus '84 recently nominated 16 local students to four United States Service Academies.  Four of the nominees are Elder High school students, Max Cucinotta, Jacob Hardig, Erik Maloney, and Douglas Meyer.  The nominees were honored at a ceremony at the Public Library of Greater Cincinnati and Hamilton County's Main Branch on January 16, 2009.  To read more, click here.   (01/22/10)


Academic Team Starts Season with Success

The It's Academic Team has started off the season in unprecedented fashion.  After starting off 4-0 with victories against Mount Notre Dame, Roger Bacon, Ursuline, and Mercy.  The team faltered for the first time in a double-header, which included a 39-38 loss to the reigning state champs - Chaminade-Julianne.

With one match remaining in the regular season, they look to finish in 2nd place in the 8 team GCAL division (Greater Cincinnati Academic League - which is all GCL and GGCL schools combined).   Elder’s Team has received an invitation to the Ohio Academic Challenge in Lyndhurst in February.

The team members are:  Andrew Condia, Ben Nutter, Steve Hemmer, and Bob Medberry, with reserves Robbie Kessler and Ben Klayer.  Congratulations gentleman!  (01/15/10)


Kyle Roedersheimer ’05 Teaching as Part of Americorps Program

Kyle Roedersheimer  is currently teaching High School Chemistry and Forensic Science in inner-city Charlotte, NC with the Teach for America program - an umbrella organization under Americorps.   He recently graduated from Clemson University studying Biology and Psychology.   After completing the 2-year program, Kyle plans on applying to medical school.  When asked about his experience teaching high school in NC, he replied, “It's not quite like Elder, I don't think any place is.”  (01/15/10)


Elder Football Receives Proclamation from State Representative Denise Driehaus

It's All in the Family as Q Laboratories Expands

Q Laboratories, a South Fairmount company that conducts quality and ingredient tests on drugs, food and water, will create up to a dozen jobs with a $1.6 million stimulus-assisted expansion.   The business is a family affair with Dave Goins '82, Mark Goins ’86, Bruce Goins ’58 and Tim Uhrig ’00 working together to diversify and grow the business.  To read more about the exciting changes coming to Q Laboratories and South Fairmount, click here(12/17/09) 


Elder Artists Paint Window…Take First Place

A team of Elder students won First Place, out of approximately 15 other schools, in the Holiday Window Painting Contest that was sponsored by Price Hill Will and their recent Holiday on the Hill event.  The team was awarded a cash prize of $200.  The students on the winning team included seniors David Beck (group leader), Brandon Dey, Connor Corbett, and David Glatt.  Congratulations gentlemen!

Elder Celebrates Holiday on the Hill

The Elder campus was abuzz with holiday cheer the weekend of December 4th - 6th.  The festivities began Friday evening with singing by the Elder Glee Club and continued throughout the weekend.  The Schaeper Center hosted an art exposition and was the music venue for the Elder Band, Seton/Elder Chorus, and other community choirs.   (12/08/09)


Elder Food & Toy Drive Brings Christmas to Area Families

For over 25 years, the Elder community has helped spread the Christmas spirit through the annual Food & Toy Drive.  This year food items and clothing were collected and delivered by Elder students, faculty, and volunteers to over 245 families.   (12/24/09)


Elder Spiritual Boosters Provide Thanksgiving Meals

Members of the spiritual boosters prepared and delivered 25 turkey dinners for needy families in the community this Thanksgiving.  The spiritual boosters were formed in 2004 under the leadership of Elder's campus minister Roger Auer and alumnus Tom Aug to help foster the spiritual development of Elder students.  This year ten father-son pairs worked together to deep-fry turkeys, bake pies, and pack stuffing, cranberries and other food items, before delivering their meals.   (12/03/09) 


Tim Haders ’79 Shows Off 25 Years of Covington Catholic Kids’ Art

Tim Haders '79 has taught Art at Covington Catholic High School for 25 years.  The Sigra Gallery in Bellevue, KY hosted his 25th Anniversary Gallery Show on Saturday Dec. 12th.  The gallery showcased Mr. Hader’s former students’ artwork.   (12/14/09)


Elder Blood Drive Helps Save Lives

Thanks to all of our volunteers and those who donated blood during the Fall Blood Drive.  There were 72 students, staff and faculty members who registered to donate blood.  Forty-five units of whole blood and 13 units of double reds were obtained.

Elder will have a Spring Blood Drive on March 30, 2010.  Please consider being a blood donor in the future.  For every one unit of blood, up to four lives can be saved.  (12/18/09)


Bill Hemmer '83 Continues Tradition of "Purple Friday"

Pat Kelsey '93 Keeping Busy Juggling Home Life and XU Hoops

Junior Jamaal Andrews Selected for O.M.E.A. Honor Band

Elder bass clarinet player Jamaal Andrews '11 has been selected to be a member of the 2010 O.M.E.A District 14 Honor Band.  Jamaal was selected to be one of seventy musicians in the honor band.  The honor band performance took place the weekend of January 8-10 at Princeton High School under the direction of Dr. Bruce Moss, director of bands at Bowling Green State University.  Congratulations Jamaal!  (02/10/10)

Elder Students Learn Through Shantytown

Elder students recently spent the night in a makeshift shantytown to better understand the plight of the homeless.  Julie Hagerty, a teacher at Mt. '74 Grad Enjoys 3-Emmy Streak with "30 Rock"

Elder alum John Riggi '74 has enjoyed television success in the past, but as co-executive producer of "30 Rock" he has surprised even himself.  He has now received three Emmy Awards for his collaboration on the award-winning program.   Congratulations John!  (10/18/09)


ESAP Helps Students Attend Catholic Schools

The Elder Scholars Assistance Program or ESAP was founded in 2005 to provide scholarships and financial aid to families at Catholic grade schools.  Elder grad George "Butch" Hubert, a 1959 Elder graduate, began ESAP with his family.   Over the past five years, ESAP has awarded over $580,000 to 1,500 students.  This year's recipients were recognized at a reception at Elder High School on Aug. 15th.   (10/18/09)

 Elder Students "Walk For Others"

 Elder’s "Walk for Others" is a concrete example of the spirit of Elder.  This year’s walk was held on Monday, October 12th.  The “Walk for Others” is one of Elder’s only fundraisers in which all members of our student body participate.  It is a twelve mile trek through Price Hill and Western Hills.  Seventy-five percent of the money raised goes to tuition assistance and the other 25% of the money raised goes to local charities.  This year, Elder students raised $66,000 for tuition assistance and local charities.    (10/19/09)


Elder Alum Developing Television Series
