Richard E. Henkel Memorial
Dick Henkel, Elder Class of 1944, enjoyed his years at Elder and made many lifelong friends there. One classmate, Norbert Bunke, was godfather for his first child, and they later became partners in a law firm. It was one of the first law firms to relocate its office from downtown to Western Hills, and the firm is still located on Glenway Avenue.
At Elder, Dick achieved academically, enjoyed basketball (although he never made varsity), won a medal for playing violin, and edited The Purple Quill. Later, at Xavier University, he again edited the student newspaper and was enrolled in the Alpha Sigma Nu honor society. Before attending law school, he reported for the Western Hills Press and as a young lawyer edited the Cincinnati Bar Association Journal for several years on a volunteer basis.
Because Dick was in the accelerated Latin School program at St. Lawrence, he entered high school young and graduated just before his 17th birthday. He entered the U.S. Navy as soon as he turned 17, where he served at the Intake Station on Treasure Island in San Francisco. He received high commendation from his superior officer at the end of his service.
Dick graduated from Georgetown University Law School in Washington, D.C. While attending Georgetown, he worked in the office of then Ohio congressman William E. Hess.
Dick married Alice Griffiths (Seton ’48) and they raised six children: Mary, Peter, Julie, Christine, Joe, and Tom. Through memorial donations for Dick upon his passing in 1999 and additional contributions to Elder from his family, a scholarship was created is Dick’s name.
