Hal, Lonny, & Jim Franke Memorial

James, Lonny, and Hal Franke, Elder Classes of 1944, 1945 and 1946 respectively, were three Holy Family brothers among a family of five siblings, including their sisters Trudy (Yaegel) and Myra (Hendy), raised by parents who were blessed enough to recognize the value of providing a Catholic education for their children. Gertrude Franke, their mother, being the eminently wise woman that she was (and later a religious education teacher at St. Ignatius on North Bend), was particularly instrumental in making sure that “her boys” were enrolled and attended the Catholic high school that was within walking distance of their home on Summit Avenue in Price Hill. Although she had to involuntarily “visit” the school a number of times during her sons' tenures, she was able to see them through and beyond. Upon their graduations, James and Lonny entered service in the Navy and Hal in the Army, and, upon their discharges, all enrolled and graduated from Xavier University. Subsequent to their exits from college, each of them went on to be unsung “difference makers” in their chosen fields of work, as well as within their families, among their many friends, and the communities in which they resided throughout their lives, each of them always remembering “to strive for the higher things.” “Altiora” is how they lived, and it is sincerely hoped that the memorial scholarship fund established in their names will assist many other Elder students to do the same!
