Paul “Hans” Frey Memorial

Paul “Hans” Frey, Elder Class of 1957, taught at Elder for thirty-seven years and coached for twenty-two. During his tenure, he never had a losing season winning 12 GCL championships, seven district titles, three regional titles and two state championships. He was GCL Coach of the Year ten times, Ohio Coach of the Year twice, McDonald’s All-America Coach of the Year twice and Kellogg’s National Coach of the Year once.

Coach Frey did not just teach his players to be champions on the court, but through his lessons on the value of hard work and perseverance, taught the young men of Elder life lessons that would stay with them after they walked out of the Pit for the last time as players. He put his heart and soul into each of the 501 games he coached and accepted nothing less from his players. Paul was married to his wife Carol for forty years before losing the battle with cancer in August of 2006. He truly embodied the school motto Altiora or Strive for the Higher Things.” Shortly after his passing, a group of lifelong friends of Paul formed a committee to raise money to create a scholarship to honor their friend and then on December 7, 2007, Elder High School dedicated Paul “Hans” Frey Court in Elder’s Memorial Fieldhouse.
