Terence “T.J.” Doherty Memorial

Terence Doherty (TJ), Elder Class of 1998, was a tri-sport athlete his freshman year at Elder. He soon found a love for running and a love for Spanish. While at Elder, his Spanish class traveled to Spain. While on this trip, he fell in love with the Spanish culture and way of life. TJ was certain that he would return some day.

TJ decided to go to the University of Cincinnati where he continued running and majored in Spanish.

Shortly after graduation, he moved to Colorado to teach high school Spanish. While living in Boulder, TJ began working at Spectra Logic where he was responsible for sales in Mexico and expanding their business in Central America. He then obtained his Master’s Degree in Spanish Literature from Bowling Green State University. The Master’s program curriculum included studies in Spain.

After graduation he returned to Boulder and resumed his career at Spectra Logic. TJ remained very active with running and bicycling. Often, he would use bicycling as a second means of transportation. On July 22, 2012 as TJ was bicycling home, he was struck by a motor vehicle and was transported to Boulder Hospital where two days later, TJ passed away at the young age of 32.

Because of his love for running and Elder, his family decided to start a Scholarship at Elder in his name. Each year since his death there has been a TJ Memorial Annual Run, Walk and Ride to raise money for the scholarship.
