Toby & Judi Heile

Toby Heile, Honorary Elder Class of 1961, began working at Elder in 1966 as a bookkeeping and economics teacher upon his graduation from Xavier University in Economics. Toby came to be not only well known and respected amongst the Elder students but was also an icon at Philipps Swim Club where he worked as a lifeguard, assistant manager and eventually managed this popular west side summer hangout.  While teaching at Elder, he also began the PR Department which eventually led to the Alumni/Development Office – an extremely important piece to Elder continued success. Toby was so very instrumental in putting Elder on the map in the area of Development and Fundraising and that program flourishes today due to Toby’s ground work in encouraging Elder alumni to give back to their alma mater.  He started, maintained and strengthened relationships between the school and Elder’s alumni that still exist today and he created a true sense of loyalty and pride amongst the Elder family that is unrivaled.  Toby took Development one step further in 1989, when he created the Planned Giving Program at Elder now known as the Fr. Schmitt Society.  He was the driving force behind Elder’s first major fundraising efforts including the Spirit Fund, the campaign to build the Elder Memorial Fieldhouse, and Vision 2020 which opened the Rev. Jerome A. Schaeper Center in fall of 2002.  He was also instrumental in working on Elder’s 50th and 75th Anniversaries.  Toby married Judi shortly before he began working at Elder and raised three children – Mike, Jenny and John and they have six grandchildren.  Mike and John are both Elder graduates.  Judi, in addition to raising thee wonderful children, worked at the College of Mount St. Joseph holding several positions over her career in administrative support, Career Services, Academic Administration and eventually she became Assistant Academic Dean up until her retirement from the Mount in 2011.   She was part of the first grant program that established cooperative education at the Mount.  Toby built the Development Office from the ground up and has dedicated his life to his family and his career at Elder.  He believed strongly that everything he did was done for the betterment of Elder High School and this mantra continued all the way up until his retirement in 2015.  Toby and Judi have worked in tandem to create a fantastic team that has touched so many lives.  In March of 2013, an anonymous Elder benefactor established a scholarship in Toby and Judi’s name.
