Seniors Named National Merit Commended Students

Congratulations to Elder High School seniors Jack Dowling, Jarod Timmers, Kyle Trischler, and Ocean Wu for having received Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program! More than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.
All four students are four-year members of Elder's prestigious Honors Program, participate in peer-to-peer tutoring, and play a sport for the Panthers.

Jack Dowling runs cross country and track and is an active member of the Support the Troops Club and the TAPMD program at the University of Cincinnati.  He also serves as a student ambassador and is a member of the National Honor Society. Jack attended St. Jude grade school and is the son of Jon and Kerry Dowling of Cleves.

Jarod Timmers also runs cross country and track for the Panthers and is on the swim team. Outside of school, he is a regular volunteer at the Jimmy Heath House. Jarod attended St. Teresa of Avila grade school and is the son of Paul Timmers and Annette Bartel of Covedale.

Kyle Trischler is a captain of the football team and recently set the all-time receptions record as a wide receiver for the Panthers. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. Kyle attended St. Jude grade school and is the son of Bill and Jennifer Trischler Trischler of Cleves.

Ocean Wu is on the swim team and works two part-time jobs. He attended St. Lawrence grade school and is the son of JuQi Wu of Price Hill.

Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
